Masonry plastic on side wall (Metselplastiek op zijgevel)
Klaas van Dijk
About this artwork.
The masonry stone mosaic consists of yellow, red and blue tones of natural stone in triangular, round and rectangular shapes, in which one could see a stylized bird. The artwork accentuates the striking division in the western facade of the De Linde school building; the red brick upper section is interrupted by a concrete roof under which the yellow brick wall jumps back.
The work of art is a clear example of monumental art from the reconstruction period following the Second World War. One of the characteristics of this art is the integration of visual art in architecture.
Klaas van Dijk (1913-1990), creator of this work of art, is best known for his manually unfolded copper and aluminum wall objects and sculptures. But Van Dijk was also active in other art areas. He also painted, watercolors, drew and lithographed landscapes.
Van Dijk was trained by the well-known Groningen sculptor Willem Valk. He was a versatile artist; alongside painting, watercolours, lithographs, sgraffitos, glass mosaics, copper plastics, stone and bronze statues, he also made fonts and wall hangings. His free work led to various commissions from school boards, housing associations and churches. In 1977, he was awarded the Egberts Prize in Groningen, for his contribution to the De Ploeg artists' association and other cultural services.
