Mary with child (Maria met kind)

About this artwork.
In the south wall of the Martinitoren, there are two 19th-century plaques by an unknown artist. The sandstone figures in the niches depict Mary with the child Jesus and Joseph with a lily branch.
It is not often that Joseph is a central figure in an artistic depiction. This has everything to do with the fact that the church wanted to present him emphatically as someone who had nothing to do with Mary's pregnancy. Joseph is therefore often depicted with a lily branch: the symbol of innocence and purity. According to apocryphal legends, he was already 80 years old at the time of his engagement. In later stories there is even talk of 200 years.
