Martini Banners (Martini banieren)

Gabriël Lester

About this artwork.

Please note. There is a fault in the movement of the X-ray images.

Martini Banners marks the main entrance to Martini Hospital like a kind of illuminated flagpole.

The work of art consists of two slender poles about seven metres high carrying five “changing posters”, similar to rotating billboards. These changing posters are filled with constantly moving X-ray images that relate to hospital stays. Images of broken bones, kneecaps and other parts of human beings alternate with those of utensils: a bottle of liquid, a box of pills, tweezers, screws. Personal affects are also included, things like toothbrushes, slippers and a child’s cuddly toy. This piece is dynamic as the direction of and speed at which the posters change varies; for example, one picture recedes rapidly upwards while its neighbouring diagonal image slowly rolls down the screen.

In his work, Gabriel Lester makes extensive use of media installations in which fragments of visible reality are isolated and then highlighted. In Martini banners, fragments of familiar and not-so-familiar hospital life are strung together to form an image arsenal that stimulates the viewer’s imagination and invites a personal interpretation.
