Life Cycle (Levensloop)

Loes Heebink

About this artwork.

Life Cycle can be found on Pieterpad, between the Selwerd and Paddepoel districts. It is comprised of a signpost equipped with signs indicating the continents, their altitudes and latitudes. At the bottom of the signpost is a mountain of aluminium die-cast shoes. Life Cycle symbolises the people who live in the two northern city districts – who come from more than 80 different countries – and the roads they have travelled in their lives.

The idea of producing a signpost came from Hans Mulder, resident and member of the District Council. Together with Buro Loeks and visual artist Loes Heebink, a Community Art project was set up on the theme of walking. Shoes were collected from local residents and then cast in aluminium. Writer Gonneke Bonting collected residents’ life stories, which were brought together in the eponymous book Levensloop. The shoes of these resident storytellers are in the book and have been used to form their portrait."
