About this artwork.
Le Travailleur is obviously a depiction of a worker. The helmet, apron, protective caps on the shoes, and the sledgehammer at the ready leave no doubt about that.
The staff of the Dagblad van het Noorden offered this copper sculpture to then-director/publisher R. Hazewinkel Jzn. to celebrate the newspaper’s 25th anniversary.
When R. Hazewinkel died in 1940, he was buried in the family plot, which was also the final resting place for his father- and mother-in-law. On that occasion Le Travailleur was placed on the grave. Hazewinkel's wife G. Doewes was later buried there as well.
The statue stands in the recess of a natural stone frame and forms a central part of the family plot. The creator of Le Travailleur is unknown. The original design probably originates from Constantin Meunier.
