Cheering man (Juichende mens)

Nijlunsing, J.

About this artwork.

An abstract representation of a human figure jubilantly raises his arms into the air. On the side of the sculpture are the words: "14 April 1945-1995 50 years liberated, 5 May Committee". The sculpture is anchored in the ground on a concrete pedestal and the galvanized steel T-profile connects the two wooden halves.

1995 marked fifty years since our country was liberated from German occupation. In light of this, Johanna Nijlunsing was commissioned by the 5 May Committee to produce Cheering Man. Originally, on the site of the Cheering Man stood the Orange-Lippe monument that was erected in honour of the marriage of Princess Juliana and Prince Bernard on January 7, 1937. This monument was destroyed during the war by pro-German factions. After the war, a liberation tree was planted here, which still occupies a central place in the park.
