J.H.H. Piccardt

About this artwork.

This bust was installed in the allotment complex Piccardthof at the initiative of horticulturists in 1951. In fact, this is a tribute to J.J.H. Piccardt: a token of appreciation for his great commitment to the realisation of the complex. Piccardt was an advisor to the Groningen Bond van Volkstuinders (allotment gardening association). Around 1940 he got the municipality of Groningen to rent out a large area of land to the Association. This was an approximately 850-hectare site south-west of the Stadspark.
 
The bust on the allotment is a portrait of Piccardt (1866-1956) later in life. He is depicted sharply dressed and with a serious facial expression. 
 
The bust stands on a brick pedestal in front of the end of Prunuslaan, facing Lijsterbeslaan. At that time they wanted to build a new entrance gate, but this plan never came to fruition.
