HRH Princess Juliana (H.K.H. Prinses Juliana)

Gerrit van der Veen

About this artwork.

HRH Princess Juliana - a portrait of Juliana - was presented to the citizenry of Haren in 1936 by the General Orange Association of Orange Nassau on the occasion of the engagement of Princess Juliana and Prince Bernhard. At the time, it was commissioned by magazine De Kunst in 6-fold made by Gerrit Jan van der Veen (1902-1944), sculptor, mechanic and resistance fighter.

One specimen was placed near the park on the old Hoflaan in Haren. In 1942 the lower part of the sculpture was destroyed by pro-Germans. Shortly before that, the Orangists had managed to bring the statue to safety themselves. The five other copies were placed in The Hague, Amsterdam, Leiden, Utrecht and the city of Groningen.

After the liberation, the Haren copy was placed in the town hall on Rijksstraatweg / Meerweg. For unknown reasons it got adrift after a while and at one point turned up at a private house. In the late 1970s it was relocated in the council chamber of the town hall. The last move followed in 1999 when the statue was returned to its original location following a request from a resident of the Oude Hoflaan.
