Genesis

Henri de Wolf

About this artwork.

Genesis consists of two aluminium rectangles. The lower elongated section has a curved surface on which rods and spherical objects have been placed in groups. They are strongly suggestive of flower buds.

Henri de Wolf made Genesis in 1966, commissioned by the primary school Bisschop Bekkers on Siriusstraat. The title of the statue refers to the first book of the Old Testament (the first part of the Bible). Genesis tells the story of the birth of the world and mankind as well as the story of the Patriarchs of the Jewish people and their descendants.

Henri de Wolf (1938-1986) was a versatile artist. In addition to being a sculptor, he was a painter, jazz musician and graphic designer. In the 1960s, together with other artists from Groningen, including Edu Waskowsky, Martin Tissing and Jo van Dijk, he helped to make the artistic climate in Groningen more vibrant. A well-known example of this is The Solid Gas Bubble (De Gestolde Gasbel), a mobile car sculpture he made with Edu Waskowsky in 1965 for the Gr4K exhibition at the Groningen Museum.

In 1983 De Wolf founded the artists' association Forma Aktua, which still exists today in the form of a gallery on the Nieuwstad.
