Facade stones: Boy, Bar, Elephant and House (7 pieces)

Mans Meijer

About this artwork.

Above the porches of the houses on the Rivierenhof, ceramic relief stones have been laid, each showing the same image of a boy with a bar, an elephant and an archetypal house. Because the colour scheme and the arrangement of the three images vary from stone to stone, each porch still has a degree of individuality.

Who made these pieces is unknown. But we do know that four streets in The Hague – Hengelolaan, Hertenrade, Otterade and Wolvenrade – also have identical bricks. But the work of this unknown artist fits neatly in with the tradition of enhancing post-war buildings with portico decorations and facade panels. This is how these residences were elevated from their uniformity of architecture and given a degree of individuality.
