Facade decorations – Flats (Geveldecoraties flats)

Maker onbekend

About this artwork.

Ceramic relief stones with images of girls playing the flute, a woman playing the flute and abstracted birds have been placed on three ends of two flats. Who made these pieces is unknown. But this work fits neatly in with the tradition of enhancing post-war buildings with portico decorations and facade panels. This is how these residences were elevated from their uniformity of architecture and given a degree of individuality.

In the city of Groningen, Anno Smith (1915-1990) was particularly active in this field. He made many hundreds of portico decorations and facade panels for the city of Groningen, intended for residential complexes, schools, shops and factories, among other things. Smith mainly depicted everyday objects and scenes: fish, flowers, playing children and working craftspeople.
