Dr. W.H. Mansholt
Willem Valk
About this artwork.
Willem Valk made a large number of portraits, plaques and busts during his life. Initially these were mainly about friends and family, but from around 1930 onwards they were mainly commissions. Dr. W.H. Mansholt's bronze plaque is immured in a wall near the former main entrance of the UMCG (University Medical Center Groningen) on the Oostersingel. Mansholt, who was physician-director of the hospital from 1913 to 1931, is portrayed in a neat costume and with a serious facial expression. The portrait is displayed in relief.
In 1921 Willem Valk came to Groningen, where he would teach sculpture at the Minerva Art Academy for 43 years. In addition to portraits and nudes, he made countless sculptures for buildings in Groningen; the latter gave him the unofficial title of city sculptor.
