Corpus
Bastiaan de Groot
About this artwork.
A female torso lies nestled among the ivy. The figure is supported on her forearms, as if she is rising from her lying position, but has neither head nor legs. Our attention focuses entirely on her torso.
This statue of Bastiaan de Groot was originally on display in the central reservation of Siersteenlaan. When this avenue was redesigned in 2006, Corpus went to the depot. In 2023, the 400-kilo sculpture made of Belgian bluestone was assigned a new place: in the neighborhood garden 'De Feithhof.' This small park was renovated at the initiative of local residents of the Herewegbuurt to strengthen biodiversity and social cohesion in the neighbourhood. To complete their courtyard, the residents submit a request for a work of art. Corpus was ultimately selected in collaboration with Kunstpunt.
Until the early 1980s, De Groot mainly worked figuratively. One of his most famous works from that time is the statue Zwangere Annet, which is placed at the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG). After this the artist started working more abstractly. There are many sculptures by him in Groningen and the surrounding area, including Zwijntje in Haren and De Bank in Corpus den Hoorn.
