Cornerstone with Mother and Child (hoeksteen met moeder en kind)

Wladimir de Vries

About this artwork.

On the corner of a housing block on Lauwersstraat (near apartment 5), you will find a natural stone relief by Wladimir de Vries. On one corner, you see a mother lifting her baby up high. The other corner explains the creation of this piece: the sculpture was commissioned in 1954, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Patrimonium Housing Association (Woningstichting Patrimonium).

There are several reliefs and sculptures by Wladimir de Vries in the city. The most famous are Agriculture and Livestock (Landbouw en Veeteelt, also known as Blote Bet which loosely translates as Bare Bet) on de Herebrug, The Foals (Het Veulen) on Radesingel and The Bison (De Wisent) in the Noorderplantsoen.
