Compassion (Compassie)

Herman Bartelds

About this artwork.

Herman Bartelds’ expressive work is centred around four main themes: highlighting, carrying, connecting and moving. The “carrying” theme is particularly evident in the sculpture Compassion. Carrying is a core concept in Bartelds’ work. This concept expresses strength, responsibility and fidelity; that which is carried is vulnerable and must be protected.

The artist created Compassion under commission from de Maartenshof, a care home for the elderly. It depicts three solid, upright brass supports seeming to effortlessly carry a heavy granite bowl. With this image, Bartelds demonstrates and emphasises the dedication, the care and the consideration the employees of de Maartenshof show for their residents."
