Commemorative Stone Marking the 500,000th House

Rinus Meijer

About this artwork.

In 1956, it was announced that the half-a-million mark in the post-war housing boom had been reached; and the house awarded that honour was number 49 on the Rembrandt van Rijnstraat. This event even made it into the well-known Dutch journal, the Polygoonjournaal. On the balcony of this apartment, a large concrete slab was laid, depicting six, playful stylised figures in bas-relief.

Sculptor Rinus Meijer designed and created this commemorative plaque, commissioned by the Gruno Housing Association. The stone was removed by Nijestee (formerly Gruno) when a new building was built, and since 2010, it has stood in the green area of the wide central reservation, which at the time it was built, had been set aside for a tramway.
