Children Playing (Spelende kinderen)

Rinus Meijer

About this artwork.

A side wall of the Praedinius Gymnasium is brought to life with this sandstone tableau. In semi-relief, two stocky children's figures are depicted in sportswear, holding a ball above their heads in a sort of gymnastic or dance pose.

The tableau created by Rinus Meijer in 1949 was originally placed above the entrance to a municipal gymnasium on Sint Jansstraat. In 1961 this building was demolished, the tableau was placed in storage. But when, three years later, the Praedinius Gymnasium was extended at the rear and a sports area was added, the tableau was returned to the public space.

Rinus Meijer, who was taught by Willem Valk, completed various commissions for artwork in the city of Groningen. The tableau with children playing was probably his first commission from the Municipality of Groningen.
