Children (Kinder)

Mette Bus

About this artwork.

On the curve of the roundabout on the Korreweg stands a naked bronze figure: a mother with her children, one child in her arms, the other holding her hand. Their golden hair sparkles as the light hits. The girl is pointing to the ground, trying to pull her mother along, but the mother is looking at her surroundings and seems to be crossing the road – a precarious undertaking in this place where some 15,000 cyclists alone pass every day. But this woman, with her solid stature, firm hips and buttocks, isn’t the figure of a little one.

The artist Mette Bus often finds her inspiration in the female figure, depicting women with rounded lines and excessively curved shapes. More of her female figures can be found in and around the city of Groningen: Mrs Wichers (Vrouw Wichers – 1985) in Verlengde Lodewijkstraat and Venus Belt (Venusgordel – 2006) in the hall of the Praedinius Gymnasium.
