Bird (Vogel)
Klaas van Dijk
About this artwork.
Legs, wings, body, neck and head flow seamlessly into each other, giving the copper stylised bird, which is midway between a lapwing and a swan, a graceful appearance. This elegance is further enhanced by the remarkably long wings that protrude high above its head.
Klaas van Dijk became famous for his manually crafted copper and aluminium murals and sculptures. He also painted, made watercolours, drew and lithographed landscapes. Van Dijk was trained by the well-known Groningen sculptor Willem Valk and was a member of the Groningen artist group De Ploeg in the 1920s and 1930s. In 1977, he was awarded the cultural Egberts Prize in Groningen, in part for the merits of his work for De Ploeg: he tirelessly dedicated himself to supporting the young artists in the group.
