Bench and Table at a Peat Hedge (Bank en tafel bij huiswierde)

Reinier van den Berg

About this artwork.

Halfway along the cycle path from Hoogkerk to the Peizerweg there is a bench and table placed on small area flagstones. The bench is situated on a bend and overlooks what we could call a “peat hedge”, dating from the Middle Ages: These small mounds used to be made to protect houses from the wet peat. It has been recorded that there were four such mounds in this area, known as the “Hege Vier” or the “Four Hedges”.
