A Call for Knowledge (Roep om kennis)
Edzard Krol
About this artwork.
In 1995, Edzard Krol was commissioned by the University of Groningen to produce an image in keeping with the theme "On Life" (Over leven) as part of the student exhibition "Science and Technology" (Wetenschap en Techniek). The steel artwork depicts a labyrinth of the brain in a head gasping for air.
Krol, who primarily paints, designed the sculpture during his studies at Minerva Art Academy. At the time, the artist attempted to have the piece placed in the marshy area near the university’s Nijenborgh complex. According to Krol, this would have been the best way to do justice to this head “gasping for knowledge”. However, his plan never came to fruition.
