6 sluitstenen en 18 tableaus (6 keystones and 18 tableaus)

Coenraad Willem Brouwer

About this artwork.

De Faun was built in 1935 as a multifunctional complex; in addition to offices and warehouses, the building housed a café-restaurant, residences, shops and a bicycle cellar. Life insurance company De Utrecht initiated construction of the new building to replace its branch office at the same location. The architect of the building was A.R. Wittop Koning, who also designed the interior.
The exterior of De Faun is richly decorated with sculptures, including keystones and tableaus by Coenraad Willem Brouwer. The depicted motifs are as diverse as the functions that De Faun housed. They refer to professions, means of transport and musical figures, among many other things.
Coenraad Willem Brouwer (1908-1991) was a ceramist, craftsman and enameller. He came from a family of ceramists. His father Willem Coenraad founded the Brouwer's Aardewerk (Pottery) factory in Leiderdorp in 1901.
