Open Call Noorderzon ART 2022

In pre-corona days the idyllic Noorderplantsoen (a Groningen city park) has annually provided the Noorderzon Performing Arts & Society Festival with a perfect setting for theatre, music, poetry, food and drinks, sauntering around, good times and amazement. Together with Noorderzon, Kunstpunt Groningen prays that this year’s edition will finally be a ‘normal’ fully scaled ‘physical’ kind of festival again as it once was. It is for this very reason that we would like to invite Groningen city visual artists and designers to develop a work of art relevant to festivals in today’s world. Do you think you can attract a wide audience with your work of art/installation? What would you like to convey to a festival audience and have it experience?

What we are looking for

  •  A non-permanent installation or other work of art, which is also easy to implement and apply. Yet it also has to remain intact and work properly till the end of the festival.
  • A certain level of adjustability of a submitted work. In the light of recent developments regarding the coronavirus, timely modifications – even during the development phase of a project – can be imperative in order to comply with possible changing conditions/circumstances. It is therefore recommended to develop an artwork which can meet this challenge.
  • Professional artists or designers, who live and work in the city of Groningen. There are no age limitations.

Interested?
Please submit a motivation letter specifying why the artist or designer who will be granted this assignment should be you. What is it that you specifically want to convey to the (general) public as well as want it to experience in the Noorderplantsoen? What exactly is the idea behind and meaning of your work?

It is allowed to submit an existing concept – but only if it hasn’t been implemented before – and subsequently further develop it. In addition, previous work in the public space is also not required. However, if this is the case, we would like you to let us know the reason for this (temporary) shift in artistic direction.

Application
Please mail your application before 7 March 2022 to sandervermeulen@kunstpuntgroningen.nl (reference: ‘Open Call Noorderzon ART 2022’). Application requirements – preferably compiled in one single PDF file – are listed in the following checklist:

  • Word limit: one A4 (Dutch or English – PDF format)
  • A resume of the years 2017 to 2021 (Dutch or English – PDF format)
  • A link to your website and/or to your (social) media-account(s)

Other info

  • Refunding of costs due to submitting a motivation letter and resume is not possible.
  • It is allowed to present, further develop and ultimately implement an existing concept for this festival, but only if it hasn’t been implemented and publicly presented before.

Selection process

  • Based on the applications, three artists are to be selected to make a concept sketch and a procedure plan. For this each artist will receive a fee of € 1.000 euro excluding VAT.
  • During the project an artistic and technical advisor will support each artist/designer during the actual design phase and give advice during the design’s technical implementation.
  • Each preliminary design is to be put before an art committee, which shall assess it and may – if necessary – request adjustments. After a design has been approved, the implementation phase starts. The members of the art committee are:

○ Henk Bothof (Noorderzon)
○ Petra te Morsche (Kunstpunt Groningen)
○ Jack Brandsma (advisor)
○ Sander Vermeulen (Kunstpunt Groningen)

Reimbursment
The implementation budget amounts to € 12.000 euro (excluding VAT).
