Solo exhibition Ada Duker in Art rental Kunstpunt

Borromini, Palladio, or the portici of Bologna: architecture is a recurring thread in the work of visual artist Ada Duker. In her solo exhibition Emerge… she presents works in which she zooms in on the aspects that fascinate her, complemented by a recent series on stone pines. Her drawing-like style is calm and restrained, orderly but never polished, with a limited color palette. From August 29 through October 4, Ada’s paintings can be seen in Emerge at the Art Rental collection of Kunstpunt Groningen.

Ada often works in series, approaching her subject from different angles. “These are subjects I can lose myself in, that occupy me completely for a while, like a scientist immersed in specialized research. It’s not about a realistic depiction, but about finding an essence, a ‘conquest.’ Emerge!

Ada’s recent work originated during a residency in Rome in 2023, at the Royal Netherlands Institute. There she focused on the ornamentation of Baroque architect Francesco Borromini: elements that people often overlook, such as a garland in a pillar or a surprising balustrade. Ada has taken these details out of their context and given them a central role in her work.

The Roman stone pine also frequently appears in Ada Duker’s paintings. These tall trees with their round crowns are typical of Rome’s cityscape. Sadly, they are also under threat: many are reaching the end of their lifespan. In her work Ada plays with this sense of transience, for example by leaving out tree crowns or depicting them in complementary colors.
