Multiple Mirthe van Wermeskerken sold out within a day

By: Redactie, 10 December 2021

Artist Mirthe van Wermeskerken (1998) was commissioned by the Kunstuitleen of Kunstpunt Groningen to make a special ceramic bowl in a small edition. In the special presale for Kunstuitleen borrowers, the multiple was sold out within a day.

Kunstpunt Groningen wants to support artists in their professional practice with commissioned art. This was made possible in part thanks to the membership fees from borrowers of the Kunstuitleen. That is why a special pre-sale was started for them, which would last until Thursday 16 December. However, the bowl with a price of €175 was sold out within a day.

The choice for Mirthe van Wermeskerken

Mirthe van Wermeskerken, recently graduated from Academie Minerva in Design - Illustration & Animation, was chosen from three artists who were selected by external advisors Mirjam Dijkema (Academie Minerva) and Tsjalling Venema (galerie with tsjalling:). Mirthe van Wermeskerken's multiple is the first to be commissioned by Kunstpunt Groningen. “I think it's great that Kunstpunt gave me the opportunity to work with ceramics on assignment as a starting self-employed person. The story of the floods is something I always wanted to make visual for myself and I think it's great that I can make it visible to more people in this way." Kunstpunt plans to commission a multiple every year.

About the multiple

The artist wanted to create a work on the theme of 'floods', because she had experienced this up close last summer. She used the sgraffito technique to portray this; a kind of mix of linocut and ceramics. Mirthe van Wermeskerken: "What I like about this technique is that you can still see the movement of the pieces that remain when you cut away the pieces, which enhances the image of the water flowing." The bowl is made in an edition of six and because she has edited each work separately, they are all slightly different.
