Artist Bernard Divendal shows new work in solo exhibition at Kunstpunt Groningen

The latest work by artist Bernard Divendal can be seen in the Kunstuitleen of Kunstpunt Groningen. In the solo presentation Mooi komt nog, his abstract oil paintings, that come straight from the artist's studio, will be on display. After a long period in which Divendal mainly made installations and spatial work, in 2019 he returned to the basis of his artistry: painting. It resulted in a series of special works. Divendal: “I wanted to make an abstract drama of form and color visible”.

Divendal's works all have at least one similarity and that is the shape of the canvases: all the paintings in the exhibition have the same upright, almost square shape. The size of the pieces does differ. The paintings are created at Divendal according to a fixed pattern. First he draws lines on the white canvas with charcoal. When the resulting shapes feel good, he starts the actual painting. He calls this way of working “intuitive formalism”.

The choice of Bernard Divendal

For this exhibition, Divendal also shows his favorite works from the Kunstuitleen collection. For example, he ended up with big names in abstract art, such as Jan Schoonhoven and Sol LeWitt, but he also opted for special figurative painting, photography and sculpture.

About Bernard Divendal

Bernard Divendal (1952) was born in Amsterdam, but has lived in Groningen since 1976, where he studied at the Minerva Academy in the years 1979-1984. Divendal is a versatile artist who, among other things, draws, paints and creates spatial work. He does this mainly from his studio, which is located in the middle of the countryside, near the town of Westerdijkshorn. His works – almost always abstract – can be seen not only inside, but also outside. In the Radijsstraat in Groningen, for example, there are no fewer than ten houses with panels painted by him.

Rieks Pepping

Simultaneously with the work of Bernard Divendal, the Kunstuitleen presents a selection of works by artist Rieks Pepping (1949-2020). As a tribute to the artist, the Kunstuitleen shows fourteen paintings with an interior theme. The works have been made available by Pepping's partner Annemiek de Jong. Rieks Pepping was the driving force behind the Frontaal gallery in Appingedam for nineteen years. His works are characterized by their tightly painted forms, clear use of color and everyday subjects.
