Interview with Alex Murphy: "Much of my work is a blend of comedy and satire."

By: Dinnis van Dijken, 10 April 2024

Currently, Alex Murphy (Dublin, Ireland, 1998) is preparing for his exhibition at Piccardthof as part of the Midseason talent development program at the resort. Over the past six months, he has participated in this program alongside emerging artists Beth Wong, Madeleine Peccoux, Silke Riis, Lily Dollner, Naomi Hubert, and Jens Huls. We spoke with him for KUNST. magazine.

"I work across multiple disciplines, ranging from stop-motion animation to music. I have a background in theater and film, which I incorporate into my art. As part of the Midseason residency program at the resort, we visited the studios of other artists and learned how they set up their workspaces for production. Since then, I have also reorganized my own studio at Moshpit of Creation. We have an ongoing dialogue with the other artists in the residency, and it's fascinating to see how we all apply different techniques to breathe life into the materials we work with.

Currently, I am writing and developing short stories and music for my residency at the Piccardthof resort. I am creating an outdoor sculptural instrument that also features QR codes, allowing listeners to experience my stories and soundscapes while embarking on a journey of exploration. I chose this approach to minimize disruption to the beautiful surroundings.

Much of my work is a blend of comedy and satire. I draw inspiration from the world around us, seeking engaging stories to tell. Additionally, I am preparing for a project at a landfill as part of Into Nature, where I will focus on microorganisms to create new narratives. The storytelling style is just as important to me as the content itself. I value immersive experiences where viewers can equally enjoy the artwork and its content."

From April 19th to 21st, the group exhibition following the Midseason talent development program at the resort will take place at Piccardthof.
