Faisel Saro's installation at Noorderzon

Annually, Kunstpunt Groningen and Noorderzon invite a Groningen-based artist to create an artwork for the Noorderzon Festival. This year, it's Faisel Saro's turn. For the festival, he has created 'Genius Loci,' an installation measuring 11x30 meters composed of textile panels adorned with black and white drawings. "Genius Loci means the spirit of a place," explains Faisel Saro. Inspired by Winti, a Surinamese religion, the artist uniquely portrays the layered nature of the world. "I found it beautiful to depict the soul of Noorderzon. That's why I looked at old maps. For example, when you walk through Noorderplantsoen, you're actually walking on the old city walls. I respond to the maps by indicating with lines where I've experienced something in the past. So, I've taken fragments from various layers of the past and connected them in my installation." 'Genius Loci' is located from August 17th at the entrance of the North, at the corner of Kruissingel and Moesstraat.

About Faisel Saro

Faisel Saro (Willemstad Curaçao, 1974) immigrated to the Netherlands at a young age. When he was 35, he decided to follow his artistic calling and attended art school. His body serves as Saro's artistic compass, shaped by both a serious traffic accident and a chronic condition. These challenges have given him a deep connection to certain places, which is a significant source of inspiration in his work. 'Genius Loci' is Saro's first installation in the public space.

'Genius Loci' can be viewed until August 27th. Faisel Saro gives a brief presentation at the installation daily at 5:30 PM. The project is a collaboration between Kunstpunt Groningen and Noorderzon.
