By: Dinnis van Dijken, 13 December 2020

Joyce Zwerver and Anna Dijk have won the Hendrik de Vries stipend with an art project about the Groningen landscape and a podcast about ADHD in adults. They each receive 6,000 euros to work out their plan. Jui-Tsz Shiu won the audience award of 1,000 euros with her plan for an art installation in which she wants people to experience what it is like to live in their dream home or place. The stipend is an incentive prize from the Municipality of Groningen for young talent in the field of art and literature. The winners were announced on Saturday evening during a livestream from the CBK, by alderman Paul de Rook. Read below what the winners' plans are.

VISUAL ART: JOYCE ZWERVER (1990) WITH 'MIEN GRUNNGER LAAND'

"Last year I traveled for half a year and when I came back I had to start up my practice again. But due to the corona crisis I was forced to stay at home and work a lot more. This made me suddenly aware of the fact that I I don't know the environment very well at all. At the same time, I also started to work more and more on the flat surface, while before that I mainly made very large site-specific spatial installations. For the stipend I therefore want to investigate how my spatial work relates to the flat work and I want to link that to my own environment. I want to take several walks in the province of Groningen to choose a location where I can build an installation. Then I will capture the landscape where the installation will be placed in order to can then be processed in two-dimensional work.It is mainly a large research project from which a triptych should come: an installation in the public Every space, a visual report and a series of work on the flat surface. The stipend and the accompanying coaching trajectory would enable me to work in depth on this project for a year.”

LITERATURE: ANNA DIJK (1995) ON ADHD IN ADULTS

"I would like to go into journalism, especially podcasts. That is also the reason why I want to make a podcast series for the Hendrik de Vries stipendium myself. The topic for the series will be about ADHD in adults. is a very interesting but very underexposed topic. Usually when people talk about ADHD, it is often about children, while it is something that you have had your whole life with. In addition, it is more likely to be overlooked in women. is in any case a subject on which you can let go of many perspectives. As it is now planned, I want to make four episodes, each with its own theme. To this end, I want to use literary techniques in drafting the story. So that you do not tells in a way that it is only about facts, but that it becomes a beautiful story that also makes you curious.”

AUDIENCE AWARD: JUI-TSZ SHIU (1995) WITH 'MOUNTAIN BUILDER'

"In my art practice I develop methods for people to play with their imagination. That's the name of my project proposal for the Mountain Builder stipend. Something as simple as this title immediately triggers your imagination. Mountains are never made by people and no person ever has a mountain created... To envision something like this you need your imagination. In my project I want to dig deeper into the experiences and memories that make up our imagination. A lot of this has connotations with, and is influenced by, our cultural backgrounds and history I research this within my work and to that end I develop methods to allow people to visualize things in a new way.I did this previously through games; online quizzes with which you can do all this yourself by answering questions I also made an audio tour where I guide you (blindfolded) through your ideal home, which was all recorded on video egd. If I win the Hendrik de Vries stipendium, I will develop new methods for working with the imagination. Each method will form a new work. The stipend would give me the opportunity to experiment with new materials and rent a space. I would like to go more in the direction of live performance because I want to play with the atmosphere that prevails in my work. I would like people to be able to really step into my work and experience the atmosphere that prevails even more.”
