Jan Altink

About this artwork.

In 1953 Jan Altink (1885 - 1971) painted View of the city with Martinitower. Jan Altink was a versatile painter of expressionism. Depicted is a part of the city with the Martinitower, seen from the former pedestrian gate ‘Small gate’. The work was commissioned by the municipal council for a price of 2,000 guilders.

At the age of fifteen, Jan Altink started the evening course at the Minerva Academy as a student. Painter Franciscus Hermanus Bach encouraged Altink to paint outdoors in the Groningen countryside, which is how he developed his love of working outdoors. In May 1918 he was one of the founders of the well-known Groningen art society De Ploeg for which he had also invented the name.

In 1955, because of his impressive art achievement, he was awarded the Cultural Prize of the province of Groningen. The Jan Altinkstraat named after him can be found in Ten Boer.
