About this artwork.

Herman de Ranitz (1794 - 1846) obtained his doctorate in Roman and contemporary law in 1819 at the Highschool in Groningen. After this he became a member of the Municipal Council of Groningen. From 1 July 1834 to 5 August 1840 he was a member of the Provincial Council of Groningen. After this membership, Ranitz was an extraordinary member of the House of Representatives of the States General for the province of Groningen for a month. He continued his membership of the Provincial Council at the end of 1840, but then for the city of Groningen. Herman de Ranitz was mayor from 1843 until his death in 1846.

The mayor's portrait was painted in the nineteenth century by Jan Ensing (1819 - 1894), painter, draftsman, lithographer and teacher. The portrait was donated in 1887 by the van Ranitz family for the benefit of the City Hall.
