Thomas Teekes Oostenga

About this artwork.

Thomas Teekes Oostenga (1812–1865) was a Dutch painter, lithographer, and printmaker from the province of Groningen. He was born on December 6, 1812, in Zoutkamp and died on July 17, 1865, in Groningen. He worked in the province of Groningen throughout his life. Oostenga learned the art of painting from Jacob Bruggink, who settled in Groningen in 1831 as a drawing instructor at the Minerva Academy. In 1838, Oostenga won an honorary award from the Minerva art society. He later became the director of the Groningen Drawing Academy. Oostenga mainly painted genre scenes and produced lithographs. His work is considered part of the Dutch Romantic movement. In 1845, he painted the domestic scene Huistafereel. Although not much is known about his life, Thomas Teekes Oostenga remains an interesting figure within 19th-century Dutch painting, particularly in the context of the Groningen art scene.
