‘Zienderogen’, before my very eyes, so fast that the process is visible. Jan Wolkers writes in Gifsla (1983), "Before my very eyes, the gray colorlessness of the early morning disappeared and he thought he could already perceive a rosy glow from the first rays of sunlight." Looking back at his older work, Hindrik de Vries recognized this gradualness. He suddenly noticed that very often two circles, eyes or balls could be seen in his work. Apparently this had been a theme unconsciously all along.
In Zienderogen we see the development Hindrik de Vries made over the years. In his recent work, he takes the theme of the two round forms as his primary point of departure. Ich und Du, after the title of Martin Buber's book (1923), indicates that we look, see, but at the same time we are also looked at, seen. The eyes imply a reciprocity.
Furthermore, we recognize De Vries' insights from his search for the iconography of the landscape. Where flat horizontal lines immediately suggest a landscape or vista, vertical stripes or lines do not yet immediately evoke a tree or forest feeling.
Earlier work consisted of more than man-sized panel paintings. Of these we show some smaller studies. As an extension of this work, de Vries made wall-hanging spatial sculptures. These have the same principle of symmetry and reflection - like Narcissus in the water of the pond.
De Vries graduated from the HTS Bouwkunde (1974) and from Kunstacademie Minerva (1979).

Galerie Noord wordt volledig gerund door vrijwilligers. In 1997 werd de galerie opgericht als kunstenaarsinitiatief.
