WEPHOST #6 met James Enos

Stichting WEP
16 May 2025

About this activity.

American artist and researcher James Enos creates alternative maps of cities and neighborhoods. While walking on the street, he rubs surfaces and makes notes in the form of quickly made drawings. The works created are combined into maps with representations of the places where he has been.

With his work, Enos responds to the phenomenon of ‘real time tracking’ and shows how he sees the neighborhood or city as a ‘real time tracker’. The phenomenon arises, for example, from GPS modules, Google Maps and the control over how people, animals, goods and vehicles move. To know where we or others are or are going, we look en masse at virtual maps instead of around us.

Enos will walk various routes from WEP to make Groningen versions of his maps. On Friday, May 16th at 8pm in the project space, he will give an artist talk and presentation about the rubings he made the days before. We will have a talk about the perceptions of time and his future maps from Groningen. He also elaborates on the meaning of WEP as the starting point of his walks and reflects on the position WEP as an artist community in relation to the immediate environment, the Grunobuurt area and the city.

This project is supported by: University of Georgia, Cultuurfonds Groningen, Stichting Art Indeed en Port Journeys Network.
