In the series of duo exhibitions Gasten ('Guests'), Henk Kraayenzank receives from March 19 in his studio Henk Oelen. In 2015 Oelen had a kind of retrospective exhibition in Groningen about 35 years of making sculptures. After years of more or less figurative images based on fragments from Greek mythology, he started to get a little tired of that.
A good time to do something different. He decided to return to his more abstract work from the eighties, with constructions of slats, planks and sheet material, but on a small scale.
Characteristic of the work that subsequently arises is above all the pleasure in carefree messing about with randomly available material. And then see where you end up. Gradually it turned out that he still adhered to a number of basic principles: the images had to look open, airy and dynamic. Pieces of residual wood painted in bright colors float around each other, connected to each other with iron wire. He also thought that at least 2 of the 3 basic shapes 'line', 'plane' and 'volume' should always end up in an image.
This work is what you see. No more, but no less. Cheerful, abstract, shaky and colorful constructions of simple materials that surprise again and again due to the almost physical impossibilities and major differences depending on which side you look at it from.
