Veldwerk: Art in Public Space | March 12
About this activity.
Kunstpunt is organizing three Veldwerk meetings on legacy. This is the third in the series:
Heirs of artists who worked in public spaces are sometimes confronted with complex questions. A work is damaged, moved, or sometimes even removed. How can you exert influence on this, and what rights do you have in this regard? How can you, as an artist, prepare for such issues? We'll be speaking with Kunstpunt colleagues who deal with these kinds of questions daily, as well as working group members of the Heemschut Heritage Association, who have already saved numerous post-war public artworks from disappearance.
With:
👉 Johanna Jacobs and Norman Vervat, Heemschut Heritage Association
👉 Diana Lourens and Aletta Bastmeijer, Kunstpunt Groningen

About Johanna Jacobs
Johanna Jacobs is an art historian who publishes articles and gives lectures. From early 1991 until her retirement in December 2017, she was (chief) curator of the Het Markiezenhof museum in Bergen op Zoom. In 2014, she founded the Monumental Art Working Group (WMK) within the national heritage association Bond Heemschut. This working group actively works throughout the Netherlands to preserve monumental architectural art from the post-war reconstruction period (1946-circa 1972). To this end, it collaborates with all stakeholders – government bodies, church communities, neighborhood boards, project developers, architects, historical and local history societies, and artists' estates. The WMK advises municipalities on the preservation of artworks by offering solutions and also conducting inventories so that when buildings are slated for demolition, it is known that artworks are located in and around them. The WMK has a "toolbox" of restorers for all disciplines, structural engineers, asbestos and concrete experts, contractors, and towing companies. Finally, the WMK writes appraisals of artworks and raises funds for restoration and relocation.
About Veldwerk
Veldwerk is Kunstpunt's expertise and research program. It brings together professionals from the field to discuss concrete questions about artistry and art in public spaces, delve deeper into them, and translate them into practice. Veldwerk is therefore a place for exchange, reflection, and experimentation. Participants share their experiences, test ideas, and develop new insights together. Themes such as legacy, participation, management, and career development are central.
