From Memory to Memorial - Living with the war, after the war

Synagoge Groningen
15 June 2025 to 12 October 2025

About this activity.

On 16 April 1945, the city of Groningen was liberated. The liberation brought joy and relief, visible in the celebrations that followed the Allied entry. But behind the flags and the celebrations lies an area full of scars, both physically and mentally. The reconstruction of Groningen took years, as did the healing of the personal and collective wounds left by the war...

How do you celebrate liberation when you have lost almost everything? When you do not know whether your family members are still alive? But also, how do you process the trauma of persecution and murder? This exhibition explores how we in the province of Groningen have commemorated the war and the Shoah in particular over the past eighty years. Personal testimonies of Jewish Groningers play an important role in the exhibition. The exhibition also shows how we as a society - as a collective - have tried to process the Shoah since 1945 in art, literature, commemorations, education and research.
