Tjibbe Hooghiemstra (1957) has been fascinated by water for years. His work is not only about water as a phenomenon, but takes it as inspiration in the broadest sense. From earlier voyages of discovery and the development of nautical charts, to new findings about water. What significance does man give to water? And how does that take shape in science and art?
Within the exhibition Tjibbe Hooghiemstra – Water you imagine yourself as an explorer in unknown territory. Among more than 80 different paintings, texts and drawings, it is up to the visitor to rediscover the element of water.
Tjibbe Hooghiemstra is no stranger to Museum De Buitenplaats. In 2017 his work was previously shown in Eelde as part of the international photo festival Nucleus van Noorderlicht. His work has also been presented in museums in the Netherlands and abroad, such as Museum Belvédère, the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, and The Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin.
The book Tjibbe Hooghiemstra: Water will be published to accompany the exhibition, with contributions by Nancy Campbell and Forrest Gander, who wrote the texts especially for the exhibition. The publication is for sale during the exhibition in the museum shop.
Tjibbe Hooghiemstra – Water can be seen from March 14 to June 18, 2023 and is made possible in part by the Province of Drenthe, Municipality of Tynaarlo, and Stichting Beringer Hazewinkel.

Drents Museum De Buitenplaats in Eelde is weer open! Onder een nieuwe naam en met een nieuwe koers. Vanaf 2024 is Drents Museum De Buitenplaats volwaardig onderdeel van het Drents Museum in Assen. In het vernieuwde museum krijgt de kust uit de art nouveau de hoofdrol, met als uitgangspunt de collectie kunst rond 1900 van het Drents Museum.
Het ensemble De Buitenplaats omvat het 20ste-eeuwse museumpaviljoen en vaste tuin én het 17de-eeuwse Nijsinghhuis met muurschilderingen van de Noordelijke Figuratieven. Het Drentse Landschap is eigenaar van het ensemble en draagt zorg voor het beheer.
