Through the Looking Glass – Gunilla Jähnichen

Through the Looking-Glass, the title of the first solo exhibition by the German artist Gunilla Jähnichen (°1972), in galerie with tsjalling, refers to the second book about Alice in Wonderland. In that book, Alice discovers a world in which, like a mirror image, everything is reversed, including the logic, and the exhibition title is thus a metaphor for every time the world suddenly seems unfamiliar, almost as if things are upside down.
Gunilla Jähnichen filters out the essence of emotions in her works, she simplifies the forms and expresses feelings such as anger, joy or fear very directly in her paintings. She approaches the emotion very directly with strong colors. For the intense color effect, Jähnichen uses pigmented, luminous acrylic paint on canvas and ink on paper. The visual language moves between figuration and its disintegration. Color areas, lines and spots, applied in several layers, translucent and vibrating, form the starting point of her associatively effective representation of humanoid figures. They seem to refer to the use of emojis as cartoonish abbreviated messages of emotional states.
In recent years, the German/Swedish artist has exhibited extensively in galleries and art vereins throughout Germany, in Italy, Sweden and Great Britain and last December participated in Copy/Paste in galerie with tsjalling:. She received her education at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Hamburg.
