Three trips to Cuba
About this activity.
In 1995, 1997, and 1998, I made three trips to Cuba to create documentary black-and-white photo series. After traveling in China, Dirk van der Spek, then director of the Focus publishing house in Haarlem, and I chose another communist country.
After traveling through a large country like China, I thought Cuba would be easier.
On the contrary: transport was non-existent or inadequate, and it was so hot and humid that I could only photograph on the streets for a small part of the day.
Moreover, my rolls of film were confiscated after each trip.
I had to travel all the way to the Netherlands and back to Cuba to develop my films and show what I had photographed.
The result is street photography in which I want to show my respect for the Cuban people, who remained friendly and hospitable despite difficult circumstances: bent, not broken.
