From April 1 to April 30, 2024, Janus, a mail art artist from Berlin, will exhibit a mail art piece in mixed media 'This is N@T the Ennnnnd, my friend…' in the window gallery 'De Prachtvink' at the Vinkhuizen shopping center, Platinalaan 505a , 9743 GZ Groningen.
'This is N@T the Ennnnnd, my friend…' is a work from 2023, A4 format on paper. Janus used collage, graphics, marker and stickers, pencil and acrylic paint. A gray, tired figure stands by a stack of newspapers that he wants to sell or hand out. In his message he is reminiscent of the old-fashioned methods that evangelizers used in a now distant past and who declared that the End of The World was near. Janus' preacher turns things around. The magazine he is holding appears to have a clown figure on the cover and he recites the famous Doors song with a modern twist with postmodern exaggeration that Janus illustrates through the underlining, the unusual spelling of the word 'not' and the five ' n's in 'end'. In visual style, Janus leans, with a bit of tongue in cheek, towards the famous evangelism comics of Jack T. Chick. Through an accumulation of caricature and meaninglessness, this work questions current cultural values in Western Europe.
Janus is the artist name of Eberhard Janke from Berlin. Janus has been active in the international mail art world for years. The emphasis in his art expressions is on graphics, stamps and text layout. In the series 'Edition Janus', Janus irregularly publishes an artzine around a specific theme that is sometimes accompanied by a mail art call. One of the last episodes of Edition Janus was dedicated to the Groningen Hendrik Werkman, according to Janus the spiritual father of mail art.
The window gallery is an exhibition space that can only be viewed from the outside, but 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The gallery is illuminated until 11:00 PM.
