The Ecological Cost of (Digital) Preservation
About this activity.
Can we think of the future of our (digital) memories if there is no future at all?
During the talk, Marije Miedema and Mees van den Bergh will present about their collaboration at the intersection of art and science, and how this type of interdisciplinary work can enrich the field of digital archiving and ecology.
Marije will discuss her doctoral research on digital archival practices and their ecological footprint. She explores ways of preserving digital memories that escape individualistic and neoliberal logics and their reliance on resource extraction. In her field work, she encountered ways of thinking about digital preservations based on collaboration and interdependence, a blueprint for ecologically just ways of archiving in the digital space.
During her process, she joined forces with Mess from the theater collective Ploech en Eide. You will get a unique opportunity to peek into their joint work, an audio installation titled "Toekomst van het Verleden". The work will be presented at the cultural festival Arcadia in Leeuwarden in the summer.
