The Collager

Pasting the unexpected

The Collager shows the work of eight collage artists from home and abroad. The exhibition is curated by Peter Boersma. He chose artists who each use their own technique and who each create new stories by assembling existing images. Each collage is handmade.

Anke Roder shows collages and leporellos inspired by botanical and landscape aspects in line with her paintings and the architecture, ornamentation and colors used of the Jugendstil building De Utrecht in Leeuwarden.

Eduard Bezembinder explored many disciplines, but always remained faithful to the collage technique. His works are characterized by a clear graphic style and a preference for reusing existing images. They almost automatically call for associative reflections.

Harri Kalha sees collage as making decisions. Melancholy and humor with a sardonic edge are characteristic. He loves technical gimmicks and visual puns, but never lets the lighthearted surprise dominate the more tender expression.

Herman Fontein makes collages from postcards. His interest in postcards is the expression of a desire to expand horizons. However, the images on the cards are constructions, dream images rather than reality. The postcard creates sights.

Jannie Hiskes aims to create an exchange of emotions between her work and the person looking at it. She draws her inspiration from personal experiences and memories. For her collages, she uses material from her own family history.

Jens Wortmann sways figures in a cubist formula and shifts perspectives to create a disorienting effect. His haunting collages are mysterious and magical. The human face is the focal point of each work. His work is colorful and chaotic.

Josefien Alkema glues her own unfinished drawings to and on top of each other and then cuts them off again. The layers that become visible show time: even her own history as an artist is compressed into them. The mystique of nature is her inspiration.

Peter Boersma combines his aptitude for form and composition with his unique technique of "tape transfers". With pieces of tape he loosens fibers, shreds and fragments of paper from old documents. With that material he then builds up his stories layer by layer.

Galerie Noord.

Galerie Noord is een expositieruimte in hartje Groningen. Vierwekelijks bieden we kunstenaars uit het Noorden de mogelijkheid recent werk te tonen, solo of in kleine groepen. Galerie Noord richt zich op autonoom, experimenteel en onderzoekend werk in vrijwel alle disciplines. We willen bezoekers verrassen door tentoonstellingen te bieden met een wisselend karakter. 
 
Galerie Noord wordt volledig gerund door vrijwilligers. In 1997 werd de galerie opgericht als kunstenaarsinitiatief.
