'The Bulb Peelers' by Marius de Schaar
About this activity.
From January 1st to 31st, 2026, Marius de Schaar, an artist from Vinkhuizen, will exhibit a black paper cut-out, ‘The Bulb Peelers’, at Window Gallery De Prachtvink at the Vinkhuizen shopping center, Platinalaan 505a, 9743 GZ Groningen.
The Bulb Peelers is a black paper cut-out in a 40 x 50 cm frame, dating from 2023.
Flower bulbs and the Netherlands are closely linked. This began in the 17th century with the tulip mania. Bulb cultivation became widespread at the end of the 19th century in what would become known as the bulb region around Lisse and Hillegom.
Peeling bulbs is a part of bulb cultivation. The bulbs are removed from the ground and cleared of plant debris, baby bulbs, and soil. Part of this is done mechanically, but some of it is still done by hand. For a long time, it was a popular summer job for adolescents. The bulb peeling season falls in July and August, and it was a good way to earn money. Teenagers still peel bulbs, but these days they're often supplemented by migrant workers from Eastern Europe and even further afield. Peeling bulbs brings people together. The main reason for this bonding is that it's monotonous toil in a hot shed. You need a bit of camaraderie in those situations. The prospect of those summer bulbs going into the ground in October and blooming next spring is still a long way off, almost further away than the sweltering summer heat in the gray month of January.
Marius de Schaar has been a paper-cutting artist since 2009. He creates New Dutch cut-work. He likes to draw his subjects from his immediate surroundings, from toothpaste to trash cans. Marius has a special interest in flowers. Using paper and scissors, he cuts sustainable bouquets that are free of pesticides and won't wilt. Marius de Schaar has exhibited in various galleries and museums, including the Rijksmuseum. His work is included in several private collections.
The Window Gallery is an exhibition space that can only be viewed from the outside, but it is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The gallery is illuminated until 11:00 PM.
Each month, a new artwork by a different artist is exhibited.
