PINK PILLOW

Suppose I were to begin by saying that I had fallen in love with a color - Maggie Nelson, Bluets

It began with a pink pillow: its softness, the shapes it seemed to want to take, the routes it appeared to offer into worlds beyond. Mariëlle Gebben felt that cushion deserved to be described. She couldn’t do it. Life moved on, and she became a photographer. Years later, that failed attempt to capture the pink cushion in words became the source of her solo exhibition.

She delved into the history, uses, construction and contradictions of the colour pink. She experimented with materials that were new to her and collaborated with others when a work required techniques she had not mastered herself, such as glassblowing. She no longer had pink (herself?) under control. Meanwhile, the softness of the cushion still refused to be captured.

In Pink Pillow, she presents entirely new work. Photographic images, sculptures and works in glass, textile and paper come together to give form to the pink cushion. The exhibition is an ode to the resistance of softness, in a colour whose meaning is constantly changing.

Mariëlle Gebben studied Arts and Arts Policy at the University of Groningen and graduated cum laude from the Fotoacademie Amsterdam. Her work has been shown at the Groninger Museum’s Wall House, in various galleries, at Rotterdam Photo, and at international photography festivals in Helsinki, Lenzburg and Los Angeles. Her artistic practice moves between photography, sculpture and installation.

Galerie Noord.

Galerie Noord is een expositieruimte in hartje Groningen. Vierwekelijks bieden we kunstenaars uit het Noorden de mogelijkheid recent werk te tonen, solo of in kleine groepen. Galerie Noord richt zich op autonoom, experimenteel en onderzoekend werk in vrijwel alle disciplines. We willen bezoekers verrassen door tentoonstellingen te bieden met een wisselend karakter. 
 
Galerie Noord wordt volledig gerund door vrijwilligers. In 1997 werd de galerie opgericht als kunstenaarsinitiatief.
