STAD ('CITY') | Duo exhibition of artist friends Jochem Hamstra and Martin de Jong
About this activity.
STAD ('CITY')
Art dealership Peter ter Braak presents an exceptional exhibition in which two remarkable artists, Jochem Hamstra (Heerenveen 1962) and Martin de Jong (Heerenveen 1963), show their most recent works.
Two originally Frisians - Hamstra, who has lived in Groningen for years and de Jong as a city nomad - find their inspiration in the 'Urban'.
Parallel is perhaps the best explanation for Jochem Hamstra and Martin de Jong.
For more than 30 years, these art brothers have chosen their own path but never lose sight of each other. Original and himself, always looking for an unconventional way of approaching things. It has been producing surprising images for years. And now together in one exhibition.
Martin de Jong loves cities. The bigger the better. It's not just the visual stimuli, it's also the physical confrontation. New York takes the cake and it is no surprise that some of De Jong's best paintings are inspired by that city. However, something new has presented itself. After the death of his father he came into possession of tools for woodworking. He saw an opportunity to allow craftsmanship into his work. From memory and working with other materials. Making wooden cityscapes.
Clear contours with some sawn perspective lines, some windows here and there, little to no color. A drawing in fact, with an unsteady hand, but at the same time also an object, material and solid. He likes that remarkable tension between two and three dimensions, between the illusion of the representation and the reality of the wooden object.
You could easily recognize a part of Groningen in Jochem Hamstra's latest work. Previous works from this series City Fragments are extremely abstract. With his sharp eye and associative mind, the artist quickly sees opportunities to make combinations. Sometimes based on color, sometimes because of the shape or meaning. The paint is worked through layer after layer and a grainy structure is created.
While earlier works can no longer be traced back to a specific subject, the latest paintings are more figurative. At Hamstra it can all coexist.
This exhibition, entitled STAD, moves further into the area between figuration and abstraction. Not a true portrait, but undeniably the city.
