shimmer - exhibition Marije Bouman en Renze Dijkema
About this activity.
The exhibition SHIMMER at gallery with tsjalling: in Groningen shows the work of two painters, each documenting their environment and nature in their own way. Although the result is very different, the brilliance of light can often be found in the work of Renze Dijkema and Marije Bouman. The visitor to this exhibition can lose himself in a new 'landscape' in each painting.
Renze Dijkema has been walking along the coast for years. He regularly takes a photo of what is in front of him, where he is walking. The horizon in the center of the image, the water on the right and the land on the left. These photos, which find their way into photo albums and on Instagram, are the basis for the paintings that can be seen with us for the second time in the exhibition. Many of the paintings in this exhibition concern the French coast, from Brittany to the Riviera, but Dijkema regularly returns to earlier parts of his journey to paint the Dutch coast, for example.
From a distance, the paintings themselves almost seem to be photographs, but if you get closer you will see that they are actually quite basic and abstracted images. The shapes are clearly depicted, the paint strokes are clearly visible. When you distance yourself again, the photorealistic image appears again. Light and atmosphere play an important role. There are sunrises and sunsets, fog, or drizzly days. Those who love the sea immediately activate their senses, you smell the salty sand and the sea and hear the sound of the water.
Marije Bouman is exhibiting for the first time at the gallery with tsjalling, but she already has a long track record. She exhibited regularly in Museum Belvédère in Heerenveen, and in other museums and galleries in the Netherlands and Belgium. The enormous space of the landscape is her source of inspiration.
We show recent paintings by Bouman, in which she lets go a little of the clearly landscape element that was previously in her work. In her latest works, the elusive in nature is really the subject: a glimpse of sunlight through the leaves of the shrubbery, the sparkles on the water, the moving shadows of branches on the forest floor, the sunlight behind the clouds. She also uses shapes that occur while painting and which she responds to. Then something unnameable creeps into the material and the image that is created. The result is sensitive paintings that allow the viewer to experience nature together with the artist.
The SHIMMER exhibition can be visited from January 27 to March 2, 2024. Admission is free. More information at shimmer - galerie with tsjalling: galerie with tsjalling:
