From December 1st to 31st, 2025, Ryosuke Cohen will exhibit a screenprint collage, "Braincell 1253," at the "De Prachtvink" window gallery in the Vinkhuizen shopping center, Platinalaan 505a, 9743 GZ Groningen.
"Braincell 1253" is a piece of mail art by Ryosuke Cohen, created in August 2025. It is the 1253rd installment of the longest-running global mail art collection. Cohen assembles various pieces of mail art he receives from around the world into new screenprints, which in turn form the basis for new pieces of mail art. This 30 cm (w) x 42 cm (h) work is a pastiche of received mail art from the United States, Italy, Germany, Spain, Canada, France, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Brazil, Austria, Norway, Lithuania, Ukraine, Greece, Singapore, and Japan. Together, the 45 contributions, which range from images of apartment buildings, busts of women, fish, typography, penguins, and monsters, form a new, organic whole that certainly resonates from a distance and reveals deeper layers. "I sometimes devise logotypes and visual poetry, and when completed, I feel satisfied with it," Cohen himself says. Cohen perseveres in a world where mail art is on the verge of disappearing due to new postal laws and enormous increases in postage costs.
Ryosuke Cohen (born 1948) is a mail art artist from Ashiya (Hyogo), Japan. He was a visual arts teacher and began his now 40-year-long project "Brain Cell" in 1985. Every month, he compiles a screen print from approximately 50 mail art shipments, which he then distributes worldwide, including in the Groningen magazine CLADBLOCK. Cohen's other projects include "Orion Soup" and, since 2001, "Fractal Portrait Project." Cohen's work is regularly exhibited worldwide.
The Window Gallery is an exhibition space that can only be viewed from the outside, but it is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The gallery is illuminated until 11:00 PM.
Each month, a new artwork by a different artist is exhibited.
