'Roast' (GEBRAAD) by Petra van Kalker

About this activity.

From 1 to 31 May 2024, Petra van Kalker, artist from Vinkhuizen, will exhibit an acrylic painting entitled 'GEBRAAD' (Roast)  in the window gallery 'De Prachtvink' at the Vinkhuizen shopping center, Platinalaan 505a, 9743 GZ Groningen.

'GEBRAAD' is a painting of 20 x 20 cm, acrylic on canvas from around 2016. An oven has been built into a dark wall and is burning nicely. A glowing red character appears to crawl out of the fiery furnace. His hands are already gripping the wall. The letters 'GEBRAAD' are stenciled below the image. The small painting contains a playful combination of horror and humor, while the technique used gives the work a deeper layer that extends far beyond the illustrative character of the image. The artist evokes an alienating character through the letters and the unusual word 'gebraad' (roast). The work comes from a series of small canvases that Van Kalker made between 2015 and 2018.

Petra van Kalker (1952) graduated from ABK Minerva in drawing graphics. Over the course of her more than forty years as an artist, her work developed into refined poetic figurative work. Her work is created associatively, layer after layer and is made up of primal symbols such as houses, boats, fish, heads and hands. In recent years she has mainly been busy with small sculptures, sometimes she makes forays into painting.

The window gallery is an exhibition space that can only be viewed from the outside, but 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The gallery is illuminated until 11:00 PM.
