About this activity.

The Kunsthof presents a summer exhibition of

Riekele Prins (Kollumerzwaag 1905 – Groningen 1954)
Riekele was a well-known Dutch etcher, painter, and draftsman who made a name for himself primarily as the preeminent etcher of the Groningen landscape. He was born in Friesland in 1905 but moved to Bedum, Groningen, as a baby. There he grew up beneath the endless cloudy sky. The vastness, the silence, and the raw power of nature took deep root in his soul and never let him go. For years, he worked quietly as an amateur artist. It wasn’t until 1933 that he took the step to enroll in a formal drawing course in the city of Groningen. There he discovered the drypoint technique. Using a sharp steel stylus, he etched his impressions directly into metal. The raised metal edges held the ink in a unique way, giving his prints a characteristic, velvety effect. His etchings depicted nature in constant motion. Although Groningen was his greatest source of inspiration, he later also captured atmospheric landscapes and cityscapes in other provinces and European countries.
He died in the city of Groningen in 1954, at the age of just 49. He left behind a body of work in which the northern wind continues to blow forever in soft, deep lines. (Source: Google AI)
